Marble Falls girls soccer begins district play with victories

The Marble Falls High School girls soccer team beat Georgetown Gateway 3-0 Jan. 27 and Lago Vista 2-0 Jan. 24 to start District 25-4A play.

The goals against Gateway were scored by senior Clarissa Mata, who had two, and freshman Ashley Ferreira.

The goals against Lago Vista were scored by juniors Miley Bolanos and Haley France. Ferreira had an assist.

“It feels really good,” head coach Abigail Blunt said. “I was doing some digging, and I can’t find the last time Marble Falls won back-to-back district games.”

Blunt, who is entering her third season at the helm, was able to go as far back as 2010, which may have been the last time.

“The team is doing really well on and off the field,” she said. “We have great senior leadership for our girls. They’ve put in the time and effort to help our underclassmen and freshmen.”

This year’s Lady Mustangs squad has five seniors, seven juniors and six freshmen. The coach noted the players get a long great, which also explains their start.

“They ask for more time to eat together and are hanging out,” she said. “If we can be a team off the field, we can be a team on the field and it shows. They’re putting the value on team work, and it shows.”

Blunt applied for the job three years ago because it allowed her to be closer to her family. She stayed because of the players, adding coaching consistency helps most programs flourish.

“I’ve gotten to love these girls,” she said. “They have a love for soccer and have experience.”

She said the years Marble Falls spent in District 25-5A facing the Leander and Georgetown schools as well as Liberty Hill has helped the Lady Mustangs immensely now that they’re playing in Class 4A.

“You want to play against great competition,” she said. “We’ve played some great Class 5A competition that was ranked in the region. From my first year to my second year, the girls improved. With the move to Class 4A, we’ve continued to see the hard work the girls have put in. I’m proud of these girls. I’m hoping we can continue it.”

Marble Falls welcomes Austin Achieve Friday, Feb. 3. The subvarsity plays at 5 p.m. and the varsity follows at 7 p.m.
